General Jewelry Care Tips:

In order for fine jewelry to retain it’s beauty, luster, polish and shine, it needs to be appropriately tended. The following provides your with a basic guideline for the care and cleaning of jewelry, gemstone jewelry, diamonds, pearls and precious metals like gold and silver.

Don’t wait – If you see a loose stone or a prong that is worn or catches on fabric, it could lead to a lost stone. Take the piece to your jeweler and have it checked immediately

Clean regularly – Clean your jewelry at home to avoid dirt buildup that can increase wear, but use precaution. It is always best to use warm water and a baby soft tooth brush. Stay away from sinks and drains

Get checkups – At least once a year, take your jewelry to a jeweler for inspection and cleaning. They’ll check for loose settings, worn prongs and other potential problems. Ask for tips on how to clean your jewelry at home between visits

Avoid wearing jewelry in swimming pools and spas. Chlorine can react with metals causing color and structural damage

Bracelet Care – Don’t roll or push bracelets onto your hand while clasped. This puts stress on the stringing material and may break it over time

Jewelry Cleaning Tips

Find out how to keep your jewelry properly cleaned. With a little TLC, your beautiful jewelry should last you a lifetime. Ensure that it does by following our simple jewelry cleaning tips below:

  • use a soft brush to avoid scratches
  • Keep jewelry away from chlorine and other household chemicals
  • After each wearing, gently wipe each piece of jewelry clean of make up and skin oils with a 100% cotton cloth.
  • Clean all jewelry except glass dome or paper jewelry regularly with mildly sudsy water (if the stone is appropriate for water cleaning), rinse well, and pat dry with a soft cloth. Let it air dry if any moisture remains. Polish metals gently with a jewelry polishing cloth. Use chemical cleaners and polishes very sparingly and be sure that the type is safe for your jewelry, particularly the stones
  • Do not use liquid cleaners or any kind of liquid on glass dome, paper, or altered art jewelry.
  • Remove jewelry when doing household or handyman tasks such a gardening, cleaning and household repairs or any strenuous activities
  • Apply makeup and hairspray before putting on your jewelry. Makeup and hairspray contain chemicals that may affect your jewelry
  • Remove jewelry before getting in a swimming pool or hot tub or bathing. The chlorine or other chemicals in the water can damage various gemstones and metals including gold

Tips for Storing Jewelry

A diamond is the hardest material known to man, making it extremely scratch resistant. However, diamonds will scratch other diamonds, gemstones and metals if allowed to rub together. Therefore, it’s important to store diamonds separately, preferably in a cloth or velvet lined jewelry box with individual compartments. Below are some more jewelry storage tips:

  • When you’re not wearing your jewelry, place each item in a separate soft compartment or container
  • Storing jewelry cluttered together can cause scratches
  • Store your jewelry in a cool, dry place. Do not store jewelry in the bathroom, Humidity will speed up the oxidation process that produces tarnish
  • Never hang necklaces as that can cause them to stretch
  • The best way to prevent tarnishing is to store clean, dry jewelry in a dry airtight container, like a ziplock bag
  • Keeping pieces stored in individual ziplock bags will help prevent oxidation and scratches
  • Be careful when using ring holders or jewelry dishes as these tend to stack rings on top of each other, which can cause damage
  • Do not store jewelry in high heat, including next to heating vent, window sill, or in the car
  • Store jewelry away from sunlight. The sun may fade some gemstones or over heat the jewelry
  • Store jewelry flat to avoid stretching or twisting. Always store bead necklaces flat because stringing materials may stretch over time
  • Store jewelry separately so it doesn’t scratch other jewelry
  • Store jewelry in resealable or special jewelry bags or pouches with anti-tarnish paper to retard tarnish. Jewelry with pearls or opals, as well as some other stones, must be stored in fabric instead of plastic as they need to “breathe.”
  • Place a piece of chalk in your jewelry box. This helps absorb moisture, which will slow down the process of tarnishing
