$1000 Bills Anyone?
1000.00 BILLS anyone?
People who know what I do tell me all the time I need to write down the stories about a few of my better finds. I tell people all the time that what I do here is like running a permanent Antiques Roadshow. You just never know what is going to come walking in the door.
Such was the case when Jerry started coming in with a few $500 and $1000 bills every month or so. I finally asked him why he had these notes. You see they are quite collectable and carry a decent premium over face value depending on condition and variety. He told me that he worked in the basement vault of a major bank chain and that there were numerous of these sitting on the shelves. He would purchase them for face value and then bring them in to me to sell them at a handsome profit. Well I didn’t see him for a couple of months which disappointed me because my collectors had gotten used to me calling them with these nice notes every month or so.
About two months later I get a call from the vice president of this bank and he asked me if I had bought these from Jerry. I said yes (desperately hoping they weren’t stolen) . He then informed me that Jerry didn’t work for them any more; he had broken company policy by purchasing these from the bank and selling them at a profit. The VP then asks me if I would like to buy the rest. I said sure (thinking in the back of my mind that was kind of crappy). I then asked him how many there were. He said he wasn’t sure but was going to poll all of the banks NATIONWIDE to find out how many there were. About a week later I get a fax from them and there are 195 $500 bills, 205 $1000 bills, 3 $5000 bills and 5 $10,000 bills. For those of you who are keeping track at home, that is 367,500 in FACE value! After much negotiating and a trip up to Minneapolis to view the hoard we were able to make a deal for 575,000.
This was the largest hoard of large denomination notes to come out in over 20 years and Midwest Estate Buyers was very proud and thankful to be part of that deal.
We were able to move every one of the notes within 30 days.
If you have something rare and valuable to sell, no matter what the cost, Give me a try and you will be very happy.
As a post script, I later learned that Jerry found out what he bank did and sued them and got his job back.
