We packed up and moved from Leogane this morning but not before enjoying a worship service for a while. We got there at 9 which was 3 hours after the service started. We were all able to say encouraging word to the crowd of 7-800 which was also being broadcast on the radio. After we left the service was going to go on another 3 hours. Church is deffinately different here. Pretty amazing stuff. Pastor Joel already has seen signs of change on his small community. The girls and women at the orphanage cooked a wonderful lunch and we packed up the truck and headed to P au P. This was a new experience for most of the team as they had not ridden in the back of an open truck before.
As we rode to P au P we went through the downtown area which was almost totally destroyed. If the buildings wern't collapsed, they will need to be brought down because of how bad the damage is.
We are talking about a 10+ square block area of the main comerce and business section of town which is completely destroyed. The sight was overwhelming in scope and human loss.
We have gone from a very rural setting to totally urban. Instead of sleeping under the stars we will be sleeping in a house under construction - very safe, no damage.
Tomorrow the medical team will be running a clinic here inside the compound. It is expected to be rather crowded. Bill and I will be setting up another water system for a different pastor on a very poor area.
Getting to know the team:
Ron Day:
Ron is co-leader with Don on this trip.
It seems that Ron is our hopeless romantic as he has told us that his wife got 2 big bouquet's of flowers as well as hiding a card in his wife's desk before he left. Apparently he knows his wife well and can't wait to get home to see her. He will get back the day before his 28th anniversary later this week. They live in Ohio and have 2 daughters in college.
You guys are going to love this one.
Of the many mission trips he has taken to all points of the globe, his favorite memory is when the team he was on showed the Jesus film on the wall of Osama bin Laden's former house.
Too cool!
